Ice wager: on 6 January, the Three Wise Men will appear on the Weser dike in colourful garb, accompanied by a "tailor". In a custom that has evolved from the original ice wager in 1829, they will then throw stones far out onto the ice to test whether the Weser is frozen solid. The final test comes when the tailor, who must weight no more than 99 pounds, is sent out across the river to see if he can reach the other side without getting his feet wet.

Freimarkt fair: the Bremen Freimarkt is one of Germany's oldest fairs, with a history dating back more than 950 years. With merrymaking spilling out from the fairground proper and percolating through the whole of the city, Bremen's inns are given over to music, dancing and high spirits – there is even dancing in the historical Ratskeller. No wonder the Freimarkt is called Bremen's "carnival season". The main event is the procession on the second Saturday. From noon onwards more than 100 floats, bands and associations proceed through the city. In recent times, a feature of the Bremen Freimarkt has been the historical market on Liebfrauenkirchhof where traders dressed in quaint costumes offer their wares and revive the crafts, trickery, music and culinary treats of yesteryear.
